WHAT IS QSPORT?

QSport is the trading name of the Sports Federation of Queensland Inc., the representative body for organised, affiliated sport in Queensland.

IS QSPORT A GOVERNMENT ENTITY?

No, but by dint of its extensive membership of mainly State sporting organisations representative of their sporting activity throughout Queensland, is accepted by government as the industry peak body for sport in the State.
As such, QSport qualifies for and receives State Government financial support for certain contracted services from the Department of Housing and Public Works, Sport and Recreation.

WHAT SORT OF SUPPORT DO GOVERNMENTS PROVIDE TO ASSIST SPORT IN QUEENSLAND?

In addition to support for QSport, the State Government provides support for programs to increase participation and support Queensland's elite athletes. For further information, go to www.hpw.qld.gov.au  

DOES QSPORT PROVIDE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO ASSIST SPORTS?

No, but it provides advice to member sporting bodies on how and where to access funding assistance.

WHAT SORT OF THINGS DOES QSPORT DO TO ASSIST SPORTS?

QSport represents Queensland sport in liaison and negotiation with governments and other bodies over policies, programs and planning impacting on sports in Queensland.

It conducts meetings of member organisations, information sessions and workshops for member representatives and functions like the annual Queensland Sport Awards/Hall of Fame Presentation to recognise and promote Queensland sporting achievement.

DOES QSPORT PROVIDE SPONSORSHIP FOR SPORTS PEOPLE?

DOES QSPORT PROVIDE SUPPORT TOWARDS SPORTS PEOPLE'S TRAVEL COSTS INTRASTATE, INTERSTATE OR OVERSEAS?

DOES QSPORT SOLVE DISPUTES BETWEEN / WITHIN SPORTING BODIES?

Only if requested and by agreement on conditions of involvement.

WHAT ARE THE ROLES OF STATE SPORTING ORGANISATIONS?

State Sporting Organisations exist to administer, conduct, develop and promote their particular sports in a State/Territory.

They are responsible, under affiliation arrangements with their national counterparts, for the rules governing their sports being properly administered and implementing plans and programs to enhance the quality and quantity of participation in their sports in their State/Territory.

Affiliation enables regional and local sporting bodies’ involvement in endorsed and accredited competitions and programs, including access to insurance for their participants and advice and assistance on issues confronting their sports. Talent identification and player pathway development via representative involvement is another positive feature of affiliation.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR STATE SPORTING BODIES IN MEMBERSHIP OF QSPORT?

Ordinary Members (State Sporting Organisations) and Associate Members (other bodies directly contributing to sport and/or recreation in some reasonable way) can be engaged in a variety of ways via membership, as follows:

  • attendance at QSport quarterly meetings for updates on topical issues for sport, including liaison and negotiation with governments and other bodies over policies, programs and planning impacting on sports in Queensland 
  • attendance at QSport information sessions/workshops on topics of interest and/or concern to sports in Queensland (currently six per annum)
  • attendance at cost at QSport functions held from time to time that incorporate networking/information exchange between participants, including the annual Queensland Sport Awards/Hall of Fame Presentation and annual QSport Members and Sponsors Luncheon
  • ability to nominate suitable persons, other bodies and events for the annual Queensland Sport Awards/Hall of Fame programs of promotion and recognition of sporting achievement in Queensland
  • copy of each edition of QSport’s quarterly publication of “Sportswatch”
  • opportunity for face to face discussion with the QSport Office on matters of interest and/or concern.

WHAT ARE THE ROLES OF PRESIDENTS OF SPORTING BODIES?

To preside over and chair all Board / Management Committee and General Meetings of their organisation to see that the business of meetings is conducted in a proper manner.

To generally oversee the wellbeing and objects of their organisation. In the case of organisations employing executive staff, act as the day to day point of reference, as required.

WHAT ROLES DO SECRETARIES OF SPORTING BODIES PERFORM?

As their organisation’s public officer, Secretaries are responsible for the proper administration of their organisations, including convening, attending and keeping records of all Board / Management Committee and other meetings; other records as directed by Board / Management Committee and to conduct correspondence and take charge of all documents and papers belonging to their organisations.

WHAT ARE THE ROLES OF TREASURERS OF SPORTING BODIES?

To ensure proper receipt of monies due to their organisations and payment of same into the accounts of their organisations, including the issue of receipts.

To ensure payments of accounts and proper recording of transactions for their organisation.

To present statements on their organisations’ finances, including audited statements at AGM’s for their organisation.

To prepare annual budgets.

WHAT REPORTING IS MANDATORY FOR SPORTING BODIES?

Reporting is mandatory for incorporated bodies, whether incorporated under State jurisdiction such as the Queensland Association’s Incorporations Act, or as companies under Australian companies’ registration.

Annual returns including changes in details including officer bearers are required under both.

The level of other reporting depends on a range of factors, including whether staff are employed.
