One of the key goals of the sport industry is to keep sport relevant and viable. We are all aware that the sport environment is changing even as Australians continue to value their sport.  For example, more people are shown to:

  • be time poor
  • have limited budgets
  • be distracted into new forms of entertainment, leisure and performance
  • want greater flexibility and sport that ‘works for them’ (ASC, 2017).

This workshop offers the opportunity for members of the sport community to explore how sport participation might need to be reconsidered; and to collaborate to identify new ideas for the benefit of each sport. We will do this by:

Reflecting on how sport is not just an activity, it’s a system;

Connecting with other sport colleagues;

Sharing successful interventions, programs and initiatives to build sport engagement and participation;

Exploring the types of changes that might be needed to help build clubs ability to drive participation outcomes.

To aid us in this process we will draw examples from sport including guest presentations from:

Dr Millicent Kennelly – Discipline Leader for Sport, Department of Tourism, Sport and Hotel Management, Griffith University

Kym Dowdell - CEO, Gymnastics Queensland

Dr Michelle Gallen – Executive Director, Sport and Recreation, Department of Housing and Public Works

Colleen Edwards, Queensland Rugby League

Keeown Rawnsley, National Rugby League
