Effective succession planning requires the development of human potential throughout our sports systems. It is readily identified that this is critical for the long-term sustainability of strong, contemporary and inclusive sport.

Unfortunately, it is not always easy to find or build the next generation of individuals to drive sport. The reasons for this may vary, but they often include some mix of:

  • Personality politics;
  • People holding on to power, control or status;
  • A desire to maintain a tight grip on doing things ‘the way it’s always been’;
  • A lack of welcome or skills;
  • Failure to determine the people you will need to meet future needs; and/or
  • No one wanting, or available to take on the responsibility.

Each of these hinders the smooth succession of power and responsibility; as well as the achievement, development and growth of critical functions in our sports.

This session will provide a chance to take a deeper look at the challenges and opportunities of successfully implementing succession planning. We will investigate and workshop possible processes and opportunities that may be relevant to your sports and do this through the development of actionable intentions or initiatives that can work within the sport delivery system.
