QUEENSLAND’S World No.1 tennis player Ashleigh Barty leads a stellar field in the running to be named the 2019 Courier-Mail Channel 7 Queensland Sport Star of the Year.

The humble hero from Springfield became only the fifth Australian to top the tennis rankings and the first Australian in 46 years to win the French Open in 2019.

The 25th Annual Queensland Sport Awards will be held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre on November 30 and Barty’s rivals for the crown are:

MATHEW BELCHER, the most successful Dinghy Sailor in Australian Olympic sailing history, who with Will Ryan won the last five world ranking regattas, including the Olympic test event in Japan, the 470 European and World Championship events.

JACINTA CARROLL, the 2019 Water Ski Jump World Champion, who equalled the current world record of 60.3 metres in May, the first female to ever jump 60 metres.

STEPHANIE GILMORE, who won her seventh world title in Hawaii last December and recorded a perfect 10 in the World Surf League in Bali in May.

JODIE KENNY, the Australian Hockeyroos captain, who passed the 200-game milestone for her country, returning to the national squad after the birth of son Harrison. She was the Queensland, Australian and International Federation of Hockey’s leading goal scorer in 2019.

MARNUS LABUSCHAGNE, whose four half centuries helped Australia retain cricket’s Ashes.

GEORGIA MILLER, who became only the second person to win the Coolangatta Gold, the Kellogg’s Nutra-Grain Ironwoman Series and the Australian Ironwoman title in the same year.

KARLA PRETORIUS, the Sunshine Coast Lightning netball vice-captain who was pivotal at Goal Defence as her team notched its first Suncorp Super Netball minor premiership. She was named Player of the Tournament at the 2019 Netball World Cup.

ARIARNE TITMUS, who won the Women’s 400m freestyle at the 2019 World Swimming Championships in South Korea, eclipsing the mighty Katie Ledecky.
