Elevated into the rugby union Test team as a raw 18-year-old in 1973, Loane developed into the most fearsome player Australian rugby has produced. He played 28 Tests and captained Queensland to 20 wins without defeat.

He captained Australia for six tests between 1979 and 1982. His first test as captain was the 1979 match against the All Blacks at the Sydney Cricket Ground which Australia won 12-6 to take back the Bledisloe Cup for the first time in 30 years.
