If you could write a script for the ultimate sporting dream it would be hard to go past a gold medal at a home Olympics. Just ask Gail Miller.
It was 23 September 2000 in Sydney. The then 23-year-old from Newmarket via Loretto College at Coorparoo lived the thrill of a lifetime as Australia beat the United States to win our first and only water polo gold medal.
Back on the Olympics stage for the first time in 100 years, the Stingers won 4-3 after a free throw goal 1.3sec from time.
It was part of a wonderful double for the former junior swimming ace, with young brother Paul having shared the Olympic experience as a member of the boxing team at the Sydney Games, and a fitting finale to a magnificent career.
Known in water polo as a 'right-handed driver', she was a dynamic figure in what they call 'football in water'. An Australian representative from age 19, a World All-Star at 20 and a World Cup silver medallist at 22 on route to Sydney gold, she hung up the goggles after 90 internationals to forge a smililarly successful career out of the water.
A mother of four and industry leader in the Brisbane property market, she sits on the board of the Australian Sports Foundation and the Queensland Olympic Council and is now a member of the Queensland Sport Hall of Fame.
