More than anyone else, Harry Sunderland was instrumental in ensuring rugby league thrived in its early years in Queensland from the early 1900's.

Sunderland was a man of ideas, his vision broad, and was QRL secretary from 1913 to 1938, always leading from the front, including trying to promote league in Victoria.

Queensland experience a golden era in the 1920's, dominating NSW rivals and enjoying incredible public support.

Sunderland moved to England as manager of Wigan in 1938 and remained there until his death.

He left an enormous mark on the game and to this day, the best player for Australia in test matches receives the Harry Sunderland Medal while in England, the Super League Grand Final best player also receives the Harry Sunderland medal.
