Margaret Molesworth was the dominant force in Australian women's tennis in the 1920s and '30s, winning State titles in every State except WA, where she did not play. And that at a time when State titles were as good as it got.
Known as 'Mall', she won the inaugural Australasian singles title in 1922 and '23, and was the first Australian woman listed in the world top 10 rankings. She won three Australasian women's doubles titles in the 1930s, the equivalent of Grand Slam titles today, and later played at Wimbledon and in the French Championships.
She was fondly described as the first woman tennis player to hit the ball 'like a man' and said to have the widest range of shots of any player - male or female - of her era.
Later she was the first professional tennis coach in Australia, she died aged 90 in 1985.
