McLean was captain of the Wallaby side which was sent home from England at the outbreak of World War 2, McLean lost four years of rugby due to war and a lot more through injury.
At the end of the war, he captained Australia in four Tests and was set for a long international career when he badly broke his leg.
A versatile player who could play three positions in the pack, he was renowned as the longest punt kicker in the game.
A born leader, he later became Queensland coach.
