Named at lock forward in the Queensland Team of the Century, he played 26 games for Queensland (1984-93) and 23 games for Australia (1986-93). He played in 10 consecutive Origin series 1984-93 for five series wins, including the Maroons’ first 3-0 clean sweep in 1988, and earned Man of the Match honors in 1990 (Game 3) and 1992 (Game 2).

Fifteen years after his Origin retirement he had still played most games and scored most tries by a forward (7). Played Test football every year from 1986-93 except 1989, toured Great Britain with the Kangaroos in 1986 and ‘90 and New Zealand in 1993, and played in the 1992 World Cup.

He played with Souths and Wynnum-Manly in the Brisbane competition before joining the NRL with Parramatta, Gold Coast, Wests and Illawarra. He was signed by the South Queensland Crushers for their NRL debut in 1995 but replaced Bill Gardner as the club’s coach for the two of their three years in the competition. Also played with Castleford and Oldham in England, and served on the NRL judiciary.
