Clem Jones was Brisbane’s longest-serving Lord Mayor, serving from 19651-75, and a wonderful friend to Queensland sport. He was the man who brought the 1982 Commonwealth Games to Brisbane and the man who himself manned the roller at the Gabba as the curator at the City’s international cricket stadium.
There wasn’t a sport he didn’t love and help in some way, but his contribution to cricket and the redevelopment of the Gabba was second to none. A long-time cricket player, administrator, supporter and benefactor, he was a long-time Chairman of the Brisbane Cricket Ground Trust and the Gabba Greyhound Racing Club, was a driving force behind the creation of the Queensland Cricketers’ Club, and served as a Director of the Australian Board of Control of International Cricket.
The Queenslander of the Year in 2000, he left behind a multitude of landmarks with his death in 2007 – even after the demolition of the old Clem Jones Stand at the Gabba, there was the Clem Jones Tunnel.
