Darby was an Aboriginal jockey from the riverbanks of Cunnamulla who was one of Australia’s best through the 1960s until he injured his arm in an accident in France. He won three Stradbroke Handicaps in four years on Mullala (1963), Celi’s Image (1964) and Castanea (1966), and on the same day in 1969 claimed the Group One AJC Derby on Divide And Rule and the Epsom on Broker's Tip. He is a member of the Queensland Racing Hall of Fame.
