One of the all-time greats of Queensland rugby league from the 1950’s, Denis Flannery was a tearaway winger for Queensland and Australia after making his name with the Ipswich Brothers club.
A schoolboy sprint champion from Nudgee College and Ipswich Grammar, he was renowned for a “sweet side-step and swerve”. He played at Brothers from 1947-58, including a stint as captain-coach in 1957-58, before retiring at age 30.
He represented Queensland 26 times from 1948-56, and Australia 15 times from 1950-57, including two World Cup games and Kangaroo tours to Great Britain in 1952-53 and 1956-57. He scored 23 tries in 14 games on the 1952-53 tour.
In 2008, in the crowning glory of a magnificent career, he was chosen in the Queensland Team of the Century.
