A dual Australian Olympic medallist in an international career that spanned 1961-68 before he coached the national team from 1977-81. He won a bronze medal in Tokyo (1964), where the Kookaburras beat Spain 3-2 in the play-off for third, and a silver medal in Mexico City (1968), where they lost 2-1 to Pakistan in the final. Named in 2000 as a fullback in the Queensland Team of the Century, he represented Queensland from 1956-57, 1959-62 and 1964-68, and captained Queensland in 1962 and 1965-68.
Don was inducted into the Hockey Queensland Hall of Fame in 2002.
