HALL OF FAME LEGEND 2011

Bald statistics tell us George Moore was the best of the best in a commanding list of Australian jockeys. Moore rode a total of 119 Group 1 winners. To his frustration, the Melbourne Cup was not one of his feature race victories but most of the other notable events fell his way.
Moore was born in Mackay in north Queensland and came to Brisbane in 1938.
Moore won a senior jockeys’ premiership as an apprentice in Brisbane in 1943. He was always prepared to take on a greater challenge professionally and moved to Sydney in 1949 where he quickly forged an association with an emerging trainer T.J. Tommy Smith.
A host of big race wins for Moore came on Smith-trained horses, the best being the champion Tulloch.
He later rode with great success in Europe, where his wins included the 1967 English Derby and the 1959 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He won the Sydney riding premiership 10 times and retired from riding in 1971. Moore later trained in France and Hong Kong.
