In March 1980, at the age of 16, schoolboy Grant Kenny did what many felt was impossible. In the one afternoon, he won both the junior and senior Australian Ironman titles.
After catching a late wave to win the senior title he had just five minutes’ rest before the start of the junior event. Trailing for most of the race he made up 100 metres on the field in the board leg to win the title.
He won the senior title for the next three years and took Hawaii’s gruelling 50km Molakai-to Oahu race for four straight years.
He then won six Australian titles in doubles kayak, earning selection to the LA Games and 1986 world championships where he capped a remarkable career with two bronze medals.
