Chosen on the bench in the Queensland Team of the Century, he was a prop and second-rower who played 42 games for Queensland (1925-33), nine Tests for Australia (1928-32) and toured the with Kangaroos in 1929-30. Born in Pittsworth in 1899, he moved to Toowoomba in 1921 and, having been graded as a centre in ’22 before quickly moving to the pack, he represented the Downs 125 times during the legendary era of the ‘Galloping Clydesdales’.

He debuted for Queensland at age 26 but was a key member of the State sides that dominated NSW through the 1920s and played a then-record 30 consecutive interstate games from 1925-33. He captained the Maroons to series wins in 1931-32, and in 1933 he led a Queensland squad which included the entire Toowoomba representative team, including his brother Arch. Aged 29, he made his Test debut and played all three games in three consecutive Test series against Great Britain in 1928, 1929-30 and 1932.

On the 1929-30 tour he also played 18 other games, and in 1932 at home, he captained the Kangaroos three times, including the famous ‘Battle of Brisbane’ when he was carried from the ground after a famous victory in the face of a heavy injury toll. Named among Australia’s Greatest 100 Players 1908-2007, he worked tirelessly for the game in retirement and was still a coach and administrator at 75.
