The 200m butterfly final at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games was seen as a two-horse race between world record holder Michael “The Albatross” Gross of West Germany and local hero Pablo Morales, record holder in the 100m butterfly. No one seemed to be interested in Brisbane teenager John Sieben – which suited him perfectly.
Knowing that Gross went out fast and Morales would try to go with him, Sieben conserved his strength. He went from last to first in the final 40 metres to win the race in world-record time.
