Nicknamed Slasher because of his dour batting style, Mackay was every captain’s dream – the hard working team-man who would never say die.
His career was epitomised by the Adelaide Test against West Indies in 1960-61 when he shielded last man Lindsay Kline for 100 minutes to salvage an unlikely draw.
Born in 1925, he was a left-handed middle-order batsman, who possessed a highly distinctive style, endearing him to crowds.
Mackay died in 1982, aged 56.
