Close family and friends feared motorcycle ace Mick Doohan would never walk again, let alone get back on his bike, after his horrific crash at the Dutch Grand Prix in 1992.
His right leg was so badly smashed doctors feared they may have to amputate.
Doohan’s hopes for his first world championship, which he led by 65 points before his spectacular crash, appeared doomed but everyone underestimated the fighting qualities of the gritty Gold Coast rider.
Doohan claimed his first 500cc world championship in 1994 and went on to dominate his sport with five successive titles.
In 1997, his most successful year, Doohan won 12 out of 15 races and finished second in another two, but frustratingly crashed out of the final race of the season at his home GP at Phillip Island while leading by more than 6sec.
In1999, Doohan had another accident, this time qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix, when he again broke his leg in several places and subsequently announced his retirement.
Doohan is also one of the few 500cc or MotoGP world champions to have won a Superbike World Championship race.
