A Toowoomba prop forward in the Queensland Team of the Century, he played 40 games for Queensland (1928-37) and nine Tests and 27 tour matches for Australia (1929-36), including one as captain as a replacement for Frank McMillan in 1933. He toured Great Britain with the Kangaroos in 1929-30 and 1933-34 and was recalled to the Australian side aged 34 in Sydney in 1936 and became the first player ever to fly to an international match.
A powerful man who played with his sleeves rolled up, he spent his entire career with Toowoomba Brothers and represented the Downs every year from 1925-37. He played for Queensland for nine consecutive years after making his debut aged 27 and in the 1970s the legendary Duncan Thompson rated Madsen and Herb Steinohrt as the greatest of prop combinations, describing them as ‘rough men in rough positions, yet surprisingly polished in ball-handling and distribution'.
He was named among Australia’s Greatest 100 Players 1908-2007.
