After completing his jockey apprenticeship in Brisbane, Sellwood rode in Townsville during World War 2. He then moved to Sydney and won the jockey premiership on six occasions.
He won two Melbourne Cups, five VRC Derbies, three Caulfield Cups and the first Golden Slipper on Todman. He won the 1962 English Derby but was killed later that year riding in France.
