Mt Isa born Rafter had faltered under persistent injury and intense public pressure after being declared the pin-up boy of Australian tennis in the mid-1990s but at the 1997 US Open, he fulfilled his potential to defeat Greg Rusedski in the final.
Once more the centre of enormous public adoration, Rafter had a slow start to 1998 before again peaking at the USA Open, beating countryman Mark Philippoussis to make it back-to-back titles.
