Paul McLean was one of Australian rugby union’s most prolific point scorers. McLean was the engineer of many of Queensland’s greatest wins against NSW and touring sides. He made his debut for the Queensland rugby team in 1973 and quickly progressed to make his Wallaby debut the following year against the All Blacks.
Revered at Ballymore he fought a career-long battle to convince southern selectors that he was the best five-eighth in the country. Played out of position for many of his 31 Tests played between 1974 and 1982, he invariably proved his critics wrong when given the chance.
