Mr Ron Archer AM

One of the best cricketers of his era, Ron Archer was a stylish middle-order batsman and dangerous fast-medium bowler who played 19 Tests for Australia from 1952-56.

Bound for higher things until his career was cut devastatingly short by a serious knee injury, he scored a century against the West Indies at Jamaica in 1955 and took 5-53 against England at The Oval in 1956.

He played 98 matches for Queensland from 1952-59, scoring 3768 runs at 31.9 and taking 255 wickets at 23.4, and captaining the State in his final game. Later he served as a Code of Conduct Commissioner for Queensland Cricket and a Match Referee for Cricket Australia and the International Cricket Council.

He had a strong promotional involvement with the game via his role as Station Manager of Channel 0 (later Channel 10), was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to the community, cricket and business in 1995, and a Queensland Cricket life member in 2000.

He was the younger brother of fellow Australian Test cricketer Ken Archer. He died in 2007 aged 73.
