Founding father of the State of Origin series, he was a long-time Queensland politician and 15-year president of the Queensland Rugby League from 1970-85. He was joint secretary of the Brisbane / Queensland Rugby League from 1953-59, leasing Lang Park from the Brisbane City Council, and was a member of the Australian Rugby League from 1973-86, including deputy- chairman 1980-86. A QRL and ARL Life Member, he is honoured annually when the Ron McAuliffe Medal is presented to the best Queensland Origin player in each series.
