Coach Laurie Lawrence still rates Steve Holland’s performance in the 1973 world championships in Belgrade the best he has ever seen. Aged only 15 he refused to be psyched out by the opposition or the occasion and won the 1500m, breaking two world records in the process.
By the time he was 18, Holland went into the Montreal Olympics having broken 12 world records but the pressure of enormous public perception proved too great. He finished with a bronze medal and announced his retirement.
