Denise was born in 1952, and arrived on the athletics stage in 1973. She became the arch-rival of Olympic silver medallist Raelene Boyle, and the two traded victories in domestic sprint events throughout the next decade.
Denise Robertson, as she then was, made the 1976 Montreal Olympic team and then, as Denise Boyd, made the Moscow team four years later. She finished seventh in the Olympic 200 metres final both times.
The 1980 Olympics were blighted by the US boycott. Australia went to the Games but marched into the stadium under the International Olympic Committee flag, rather than the national flag. Denise Boyd, along with swimmer Max Metzker, were the co-flag bearers.
She competed in the 1974, 78 & 82 Commonwealth Games.
Robertson married Australian Pole Vault Champion Ray Boyd in 1978. The Boyds have three children, all of whom are successful athletes.
