Ruby was a pioneer in media coverage of women’s sport as a long-time columnist with The Courier-Mail. She was an outstanding player, administrator and commentator.
Originally from Warwick, she was a standout hockey player, among other sports, and is credited with inventing the modern swimming cap when at age 13 she cut a football bladder in half. She was a life member of the Queensland Olympic Council, and a member of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame
