The green jersey is part of Tour de France folklore, introduced to the world famous cycling race in 1953 for the winner of the overall points classification and the sprint cyclist's ultimate treasure.
In 67 years since, only eight riders have won it more than twice, and only one from southern hemisphere...Robbie McEwen.
The 171cm, 67kg Brisbane flyer was the first Australian to win the green jersey in 2002 and a three-time winner overall, repeating success in 2004 and 2006
A BMX champion turned road cyclist, in a 17-year professional career from 1990, he rode the Tour 12 times for 12 individual stage wins and ranked among the world's fastest sprinters at his peak.
An Australian Olympian in 1996-2000-2004, he was a World Championship road race silver medallist in 2002, Cycling Australia Hall of Fame member in 2015 and a 2019 inductee to the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and in 2020 Robbie McEwen AM became a Queensland Sport Hall of Fame inductee.
