Representatives from Queensland Sporting Organisations recently took part in an Inclusive Sport Workshop, including the Realistic RACE experience. The activity gave participants the chance to step into real-world scenarios and better understand some of the barriers people with disabilities experience when accessing sport and community spaces. As one participant shared, “The Realistic Race allowed me to gain a better understanding of the difficulties people with different ranges of disabilities face.”

Participants left with practical ideas for creating more inclusive experiences for people with disabilities, from improving accessibility information to embedding accessibility considerations into planning and delivery. To finish the day, each organisation developed a draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP), providing a roadmap for turning these learnings from the Realistic Race into action.

One participant said, “The Realistic Race was such a fun way to bring the challenges and barriers people with a disability face when in the community. Presenters were so supportive and knowledgeable,” while another summed up the day by saying, “Loved the Race. Very realistic and so glad I came today.” We are looking forward to running Round 2 of the Workshop on the 24th of June!
